It’s Hard to Ignore…
On one side, these data center projects represent growth:
major investment, construction jobs, infrastructure development, and a clear sign that a market is becoming more technologically relevant.
On the other side, communities are asking fair questions:
- Who pays for the power demand?
- Who benefits from the tax incentives?
- How many permanent jobs are actually created?
And what happens when local infrastructure has to stretch to support facilities most residents will never step inside?

From a construction and development standpoint, this is where the conversation gets interesting.
A data center project can be privately funded and still create public impact.
That does not mean data centers are bad.
It also does not mean every concern is anti-growth.
It means the market is changing, and the old definition of a “good project” might not be enough anymore.
Maybe the real question is this:
Should data centers be treated like traditional commercial real estate, critical infrastructure, or something entirely different?
They are mostly privately owned, but they function much closer to infrastructure.
A normal commercial building impacts traffic, jobs, taxes, and local development. Data centers do all of that, but they also create major demand on power, utilities, land use, and sometimes water. That puts them in a different category.
They can be a major win for local markets, especially from a construction, investment, and tax base standpoint. But communities are also right to ask harder questions before approving them.
The issue is not whether data centers are “good” or “bad.”
The issue is whether the local market gets a fair long-term tradeoff.
If a project brings major utility demand, incentive packages, and infrastructure strain, then the community deserves transparency on what it receives in return.
Data centers are not just real estate and not fully public infrastructure. The current scale is putting these projects in a class of their own.
Growth is good.
But smart growth requires more than a big investment.
